#26: A crochet bikini
I’m writing this on a high after a drumming lesson. If I could bottle the feeling of playing something well on the drums, or singing in the car, or being in a creative flow of drawing or painting, I’d take a sip of it everyday. It’s a feeling of being so ✨ present ✨ and ✨ alive ✨. Then again, it’s probably the infrequency or unexpectedness of those pure, joyful moments that make them feel so good. Maybe having it available all the time would dilute the joy. It’s the dark that helps us appreciate the light.
I got unexpectedly deep there, and someone famous and wise definitely said it better. Fortunately though it’s just us here, so instead we’ll have an feeble analogy about drinking a feeling and later… a crochet bikini. We knew I couldn’t stay serious for long.
What are those moments that make you feel present and alive? I’d love to draw them, so let me know below.
Here are this week’s creative life updates.
Art out in the world
I’m excited to have my art on show and for sale at a local cafe.
One of the pieces is of the cafe itself, and I like imagining somebody looking at it and realising they’re sitting on a chair that’s in the painting. And then realising that their drink is 2D and they are actually in the painting, stuck in a frame for eternity.
The style of this felt really loose and free. I want more of that energy.
I’ve shown some of the pieces on display in my previous letters: for example, the yellow tree collage pictured below and a collage full of sheep. They’re for sale so just let me know if you’d like a closer look!
Something wearable
I’m still crocheting these squares but now I want to use them for something way more fun than a blanket.
A blanket stays indoors. A piece of clothing goes out and people say nice things about it. Am I shallow for seeking that crochet cred? Surely it’s only human after hours (and hours) of making something that you want to go outside and have someone say ‘wow how unique and functional - a crochet bikini!’.
Here are a few initial ideas. What else I could turn the squares into? Silly, outrageous and sensible ideas are all welcome.
Sketchbook-ing
I’m really into documenting trips with sketchbooks, even if they take me ages to finish post-trip. A few weeks ago I went on a hen-do and here are a couple of my favourite parts of our first day there.
Yes, my team won sports day. GO BLUES!
Leaves
In last week’s letter I said I was going to make a Spring/floral art piece. I struggled. Then I made some leaves. I struggled more. Where am I going with it? I don’t know. Maybe next week I’ll have more ideas.
How are you being creative at the moment? What gets in your way? I would love to hear all about it.
That’s my week in art! I hope yours has been a good one too <3
Thank you
